This is a series that describes our response to a God who shows up where we live. God and his work often emerge as if from nowhere to surprise and yet fulfill us in ways we couldn’t have previously imagined.
January 15 “The Treasure”
In Matthew’s story, we see things new and things old. This will be a book sermon on the entire gospel of Matthew about God’s treasure to us. It will highlight both the Old and New Testament’s story on how “Jesus saves his people from their sins.”
January 22 “The Forerunner”
Text: Matthew 3:1-12
John shocks us with his announcement of the coming king. Just as a presidential motorcade has different elements so too John introduces the coming of Jesus by saying, “Get out of the way. Turn around!” This sermon will describe the significance of repentance in our lives.
January 29 “The Concert”
Text: Matthew 3:13-17
John was shocked by Jesus’ submission to baptism. But in this event we hear the voice of God and learn of a Messiah who humbly identifies himself with humanity. Just as someone introduces the concert performer, so John introduces Jesus from the shadows but is then surprised by his entrance. We too are surprised by God and his activity. We too need to identify with Jesus in baptism and learn submission to a new king.
