Curious to go deeper in your ability to understand the Bible? Would you like to learn more about a specific topic in a classroom setting?

If this resonates with you then consider participating in one of our Training Electives. These are designed to help South Siders go deeper in their spiritual development. If you're already in a Journey Group and crave more instruction and training, then consider the opportunities listed below.

Sunday Morning Training Electives

Financial Peace University

  • Sundays 9:00-10:00 a.m.
  • Teacher: Dave Kinzer
  • Cost: $69 for materials plus a monthly membership of $9.99. Scholarships are available by contacting Brooks Wilson.
  • Childcare: Regular Sunday morning South Side Kids programming available for children 5th grade and younger during the 9:00 hour.
  • Class Description: Financial Peace University is Dave Ramsey’s #1 proven program that will show you how to master budgeting, pay off debt, build wealth, and give generously.

How to Read the Bible

  • Sunday 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Teacher: Frank Dicken
  • Cost: None
  • Childcare: Regular Sunday morning South Side Kids and student ministry programming available for children and students 8th grade and younger during the 10:30 hour.
  • Class Description: This class will help you better understand what the Bible means and how that matters for you and your life.
  • Class Resources: Owning a Study Bible is preferable like: The New Oxford Annotated Bible, The Harper Collins Study Bible, The NIV Study Bible
  • Class Outline:
    Session 1:  What is the Bible (and what is it not)?
    Session 2:  Bible translations: Which one is best and how can I used them to understand the Bible?
    Session 3:  Historical context – Why understanding where and when matters
    Session 4:  Literary context – Why having favorite verses might be a bad idea
    Session 5:  Approaching a passage of Scripture – What should I be looking for when I read the Bible?
    Session 6:  Application – How does any of this matter to me?
    Session 7:  Q & A – Ask anything you’d like and there might be an answer!

  • Childcare: Regular Sunday morning South Side Kids and student ministry programming available for children and students 8th grade and younger during the 10:30 hour.
  • Class Description:  Momentum invites everyday people to rethink God’s mission, the call of the Church, and their individual roles. Through this elective, you will be actively engaged in what the Scriptures teach about God’s mission in the world and your next steps in that mission.

Mid-Week Training Electives

Women's Study - ABIDE: A Study of 1, 2, 3 John

  • Mondays 6:30-8pm
  • Teachers: Jen Claytor and Parian Hull
  • Cost: $10 for workbook
  • Childcare: Will be provided depending on the needs of the women attending. Bring $2 per child to reimburse child care workers.
  • Class Description: Three short books in the Bible have much to teach us about the depth of our Father’s love and what it means to abide in Him. As we study through each chapter of 1, 2, 3 John, verse by verse, we’ll be encouraged by the commandment to love one another as we walk in the light, truth and love of Christ. Come connect and grow with other women as we study together this winter!

    Session 2: A Credible Witness (1 John 1:1-2:2)
    Session 3: The Tests of Righteousness and Love (1 John 2:3-17)
    Session 4: The Test of Truth, The Call to Abide (1 John 2:18-28)

    Session 6: Truth and Error, God is Love (1 John 4:1-21)

    Session 9: Walk in Truth and Love (2 John)
    Session 10: Imitate God (3 John)
    Session 11: Wrap-Up

  • Childcare Options: None
  • Class Description: Has it ever dawned on you that nothing has ever dawned on God? He knew before the world began that His people would face hardship, so He gave us His Word. The Book of Ephesians is a survival manual—it equips believers to thrive in a world that hates the message of Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle writes to encourage believers to live well—we've been lifted from the graveyard of sin and called to shout the gospel into the darkened world. Class time will include a time for teaching, discussion, as well as viewing a brief instructional video from author and pastor J.D. Greear via RightNow Media. Lesson materials will be provided.

    Session 3: Ephesians 2:1–10
