Essential Beliefs of South Side Christian Church
We believe… in one God, the creator and sustainer of the universe, who is all powerful (Luke 1:37) and eternal (Genesis 1:1, 26-27). He exists as three distinct persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) although He is One (Deut. 6:4). He is all powerful (Luke 1:37) and all knowing (Rom. 11:33). We believe that God loves us and wants to have a relationship with us (1 John 4:16).
We believe… that Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15), choosing to die on a cross for our sins (Philippians 2:6-8). The death of Jesus Christ and His bodily resurrection from the dead provide the only ground for our forgiveness and eternal salvation. Salvation is offered freely and available to all who place their trust in Christ, surrender their lives to Him, and obey His teachings (John 3:16-17; Ephesians 2:8-10, Acts 2:38). He is at the right hand of God and will return one day as our victorious Savior (Acts 1:11).
We believe… that the Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is the power that convicts, converts and changes us. He lives within us to comfort, guide, convict and enable us to live in ways that honor God. (Romans 8:11, John 14:16-1 7, 16:7-13; 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; Galatians 5:22-23) He guides us in our understanding of His Truth (1 Corinthians 2:10).
We believe… the Bible to be the divinely inspired Word of God. It is without error and it is given to us so that we may know and understand the truth of God and His love (2 Timothy 3:16-17). We look to the Bible as the final authority on all matters of faith and conduct (John 17:17).
We believe… that People were created in God’s image. We are all sinners by choice and thus condemned by our own sin against God. At the same time we are the most valuable thing in all of God’s Creation. We have never met a human being that God did not desperately love and care about. By acceptance of God’s plan, we can be saved, our sins forgiven and we can become His children. (Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:8; Romans 6:23; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 2:36-39).
We believe… that the Church is the gathering of God’s family on earth. Christ is the head of His Church. The Church, as a Body, is made up of many parts (People) who have become Christians through faith, repentance, confession and baptism into Him. We not only belong to God, we belong to each other. (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4).
We believe… baptism (by immersion in water) serves as a symbol of the participation in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism is intended to be a means of union with Christ, a benchmark of transformation in someone’s life (Romans 6:1-8), and a part of God’s plan for salvation (Mark 16:16). It is not simply a matter of choosing a new lifestyle, it has to do with being a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17). Everyone sins and falls short of what God wants (Romans 3:23) but through Christ we receive forgiveness and new life (Acts 2:38; 13:38).
We believe… in the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ and the bodily resurrection of the dead. Those who are believers and followers of Christ will spend everlasting life in Heaven with the Lord, those who do not believe will spend everlasting punishment in Hell (John 14:1-3; Matthew 25:31-46; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
We believe… in the unity of all believers and maintain that Jesus Christ is the sole head of the church. Each local congregation is free to decide and govern as they deem appropriate in accordance with the scriptures. We are not the only Christians, but we are Christians only (Ephesians 4:4-6; John 17:20-21; Colossians 1:1 7-18).
